Baltic Sea Economic Congress

18 September 2008
Baltic Development Forum will co-host the Baltic Sea Economic Congress to be held 23 September in Warsaw in cooperation with Office of the Committee for European Integration and demosEuropa, an event devoted exclusively to the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. The Strategy is a visionary project aimed at changing perceptions of the Region both among its inhabitants and across the European Union.

As one of the significant ventures of the European Union, this project shall contribute through intensification of cooperation between the states of the Region to initiation of a new era in their mutual relations. Eventually it is going to benefit the entire Union, by improving its internal cohesion and level of integration.

During the Baltic Sea Economic Congress, representatives of the Baltic Sea Region states will discuss not only the challenges, but also mainly the economic development opportunities and prospects of the entire Region.

The Congress will address issues such as innovation, internal market, entrepreneurship and reduction of redundant burdens imposed on business. Although this year’s edition of the Congress will be an expert event of a relatively small scale, its significance should not be underestimated due to the highly competent group of people that are gathered. All participants are expected to take active part in the discussions. The speakers mentioned in the programme are opening the debate on the competitiveness of the region.

The issue of development and attractiveness of the Baltic Sea does not only concern only the coastal cities or regions. Due to the important role played by the Baltic Sea Region in the overall economies of the littoral states, any decisions concerning its future must be made at the highest level and involve both the local and central decision makers. Effectiveness of those efforts will largely contribute to the power and competitiveness of the economies of the Baltic Sea Region states.
