BDF welcomes new Strategic Partner

The Dutch gas-infrastructure company Gasunie has joint BDF's network as Strategic Partner. The official signing of the agreement took place in the Netherlands today. Gasunie's CEO Marcel Kramer is a confirmed speaker at the BDF Summit in Copenhagen-Malmö, where regional energy cooperation and integration will be among the central topics.

BDF Deputy Director joins JKL

BDF Deputy Director Adam Kanne will soon join JKL, a leading Nordic communications and PR firm. This means that Adam unfortunately leaves the BDF Secretariat, where he has been an apprecited member since 2005. BDF is currently in the process of recruiting a new colleague to the Secretariat in Copenhagen.

Northern Dimension Forum

At the First Northern Dimension Forum, held in St Petersburg 13-14 May, the BDF Director Hans Brask called for greater efforts to enhance the integration in the Baltic Sea Region."Positive neighbourhood effects on competitiveness and economic growth have to be earned. They do not come automatically", director Brask underlined in his message.

BDF Report on Regional Energy Cooperation

BDF has commited itself to conduct a substantial report on regional energy cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region. The aim is to look at the challenges and opportunities of the Region's energy market and define the added value of regional cooperation. Lennart Meri Conference

The Baltic Development Forum Chairman Uffe Ellemann-Jensen closed the Lennart Meri Conference in Tallinn 30 March. Ellemann-Jensen underlined Lennart Meri's great importance for the development of Estonia as well as the Baltic Sea Region. Before his decease Lennart Meri was a respected member of the Baltic Development Forum Honorary Board and a speaker at the first BDF Summit in Copenhagen 1999.

The Forum of Young Global Leaders has listed 18 young leaders from the Baltic Sea Region on its annual list. Among the names from the Region are for example Christina Hvid from Denmark, Anu Tali from Estonia, Ewa Sadowska from Poland, and Mattias Klum from Sweden.

EU InterBaltic Project issues Transport Strategy Master Plan

The EU InterBaltic transport project, of which Baltic Development Forum has been an active partner, has been successfully concluded. The project recently developed a Draft Framework for a pan-Baltic Transport Strategy Master Plan with recommendations how to improve the infrastructure and transport sector in the Baltic Sea Region.

Swedish and Finnish Prime Ministers call for Common Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region

Speaking at the 9th Baltic Development Forum Summit in Tallinn, Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt called for the countries of the region to unite and support regional strategy on environment, climate, and integration. The Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt announced that the Swedish government intends to launch an EU Baltic Sea Strategy during their EU Presidency in 2009. It will include improved cross border infrastructure, cooperation on R&D, innovation and cluster development, which are all areas that will spearhead further integration of the internal market.

Four Baltic Sea Region countries in the top ten of global competitiveness

The 2007 State of the Region Report illustrates that the last year has seen exceptionally strong performance by the economies in the Baltic Sea Region, mainly due to the raise in labour productivity and mobilization. The region’s FDI attraction has also improved significantly, while exports and patenting remain stable at high levels.

Talents and business up-grading the way to develop the Baltic Sea Region

- Business-leaders and policy-makers in the Baltic Sea Region need to sharpen their joint efforts to attract the best and the brightest. The future economic growth of the Region depends on its ability to upgrade high-tech and knowledge-intensive industries - and this can only be done with an increase in the labour force, said Uffe Ellemann-Jensen, Chairman of Baltic Development Forum at the opening of its 9th annual Summit.

Femern Belt Bridge Agreement

An agreement to build a fixed link in the southern Baltic Sea between Germany and Denmark has been reached by the Ministers of Transport Flemming Hansen and Wolfgang Tiefensee. According to current plans, the Femern Belt bridge should be ready for its virgin voyage in 2018.

Renewed Baltic Sea Cooperation

The Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) met in Malmö under the Swedish Chairmanship on 12-13 June at the level of foreign ministers. The Parties agreed that a reformation of the institution was needed, and that a strategy for the Baltic Sea Region should be developed to find new and effective ways for regional cooperation in a globalised world.

Talents on Top of Europe, Berlin

The unique cooperation model used in the political field by the countries around the Baltic Sea needs to be extended to the public-private sector in order to increase the competitiveness and attractiveness of the Baltic Sea Region. This was one of the main conclusions reached by the leading representatives from business, government and research within the ICT and Life-Science at the seminar “Talents on Top of Europe” at the Nordic Embassies in Berlin on the 11th of June. Among the keynote speakers were: Danish Minister of Education, Bertel Haarder, President of the German Bundesrat and Minister President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Dr. Harald Ringstorff, Senior Director of Siemens AG, Uwe Hermann.

B7 Islands Joins the BDF Branding Initiative

The conference "Trends Strategies and Branding in the Baltic Sea Region" discussed the perception of the Baltic Sea Region as a tourism destination and the challenges islands face. Sessions aimed at finding answers on how the islands can develop markets and what trends there are in tourism. BDF gave insights of the Branding process of the Baltic Sea Region and encouraged the islands to get on board. Read more about the event.

Tourist Boards Joins the BDF Branding Initiative

An exclusive meeting on tourism cooperation on 23 May was organised jointly by VisitDenmark and Baltic Development Forum. The initial idea behind the meeting was to encourage the heads of national tourist boards to discuss and commit to future cooperation starting with the cruise industry. The meeting brought very positive and concrete results.

Baltic Sea Initiative Stakeholder Meeting

"Talents in the Baltic Sea Region" was the titel of the VI. Stakeholder Meeting, which took place in Copenhagen last week. The meeting was arranged by the Nordic Council of Ministers and supported by the Baltic Development Forum. Representatives from business, politics and academia discussed the challenge of Talent Scarcity in the Baltic Sea Region.
